Think you have a tough daily commute? Scott Ose probably has you beat. He drives about 120 miles from his home near Jacksonville, Florida, to a factory in Savannah, Georgia, at least five days a week and sometimes seven, due to the demands of his job as an aircraft certification inspector at Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation.
That’s 240 round-trip (though mostly highway) miles a day. He racks up all those miles—and more—on one car: his 2005 Toyota Corolla S. While the vehicle’s odometer stopped turning several years ago, when it reached “299,999” (a design quirk of that particular year and model), Ose says he has since been using a detailed spreadsheet and the car’s trip odometer to meticulously log the mileage. By his own calculations, Ose says his Corolla has now traveled an astonishing 609,000 miles—and counting.
But Ose isn’t even thinking about getting another car. Not even close. “I’ll push through to a million miles,” he says without hesitation. “It’s kind of a personal quest now, to reach that goal.”
Perhaps qualifying him for the understatement of the year, Ose calls his trusty ride “exceptional.” Aside from regular maintenance—including using synthetic oil since he bought the car—and “a lot of tires,” Ose says his Corolla has required very little work to keep it going, validating his decision to buy it when he walked into Chatham Parkway Toyota in Savannah.
“I did the research and went with Toyota,” says the 44-year-old first-time Toyota owner, citing reliability, fuel efficiency, power and dependability as determining factors. “I needed something for the distance I’d be driving; the welfare of my family depends on it.”
Between him and his wife Jada, they have 11 children, including 6-year-old daughter Zoe, their youngest. She’s the reason Ose moved to the Jacksonville area from Savannah, knowing he’d have to make the marathon drive. Zoe has cystic fibrosis, a genetic and life-shortening chronic disease affecting the lungs and digestive system (http://zoeforlife.blogspot.com/); she receives treatment at Nemours Children’s Clinic in Jacksonville, the closest facility of its kind.
So what’s his secret? Does Ose have any tips for making the miles fly by during his daily four hours at the wheel? “Talk radio,” he says. “And a lot of coffee.”
